HP has unveiled a new home server for PCs and Mac computers that allows for easy sharing, backup, remote access, and uploading to rich social media sites. The device is based on the Windows Home Server platform and two models are available including the HP MediaSmart Server ex485/ex487.

The device organizes files across all PCs on the home network and from across the Internet. Both models share most of the same features including HP Media Collector, media streaming, iTunes server, HP Photo Publisher, HP Photo viewer, PC Hard Drive Backup, Mac Hard Drive Backup, Server Backup, smart power management, and more.

The home servers feature an Intel Celeron 2GHz 64-bit CPU and 2GB of 800MHz DDR2 RAM. The units can be configured with up to 9TB of storage space. The ex485 model ships with 750 GB of storage for $599 and the ex487 includes 1.5TB for $749. The systems can be pre-ordered starting on January 5th and shipping is expected in February.
