The Olympus Pen uses powerful features in an easy-to-use package. It has many features that professional cameras have but with much more ease of use. This camera is the first in the Olympus PEN series with a built-in pop-up flash that makes it easy to illuminate low-light subjects, reduce red-eye and fill in dark areas of the picture. The E-PL1 has everything you need to produce beautiful professional-quality images. It features a large image sensor, in-body Image Stabilization, Imager Autofocus, the proven Olympus Dust Reduction System and the TruePic V Image Processor.

The Olympus Pen E-PL1 also makes recording HD movies simple with an easy to reach red “direct button” on the back of the camera. You can easily go from shooting still pictures to video and back again so you always get the great still shots you want with all the video to go along with it. It features a 12.3-megapixel interchangeable lens with Micro Four Thirds format. It includes a 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 digital zoom lens plus a 2.7-inch HyperCrystal LCD with Live View function and Continuous Autofocus tracking system.

The E-PL1 has used technology to automate the camera, freeing you up to focus on your subjects instead of focusing on your camera's settings. Some of the automated systems include 19 Scene- Select Modes which include Macro and Panorama, and the ePortrait Mode that enables you to smooth your subject’s complexion. It features iAuto Mode which will automatically adjust depending on the situation. Another feature is Face Detection which can reduce the chances of taking a blurred picture by recognizing up to 8 faces and tracking them within the image area automatically focusing for the best blur free picture.
