At CES 2009 last week AMD/ATI launched a new family of mobile graphics processors called the HD 4000 series. Within the series is a range of parts from mainstream to enthusiast segments. Some of the mobile GPUs in the family also support Crossfire.

The family includes the HD 4800, HD 4600, HD 4300, and HD 4500 GPUs. The big improvement here for AMD/ATI is that the mobile GPUs now offer all of the features that we have become used to in desktop GPUs. The HD 4800 series will also be the first mobile GPUs to make use of GDDR5 memory.

At CES, one of the coolest notebooks to showcase the new ATI GPUs was the MSI GT725. The notebook was massive and offered up Crossfire HD 4800 GPUs along with a massive screen. The screen had fantastic colors and the system as a whole was exactly what many laptop gamers are looking for. As feature packed as it was, I expected the price to be $5000. I was very surprised to hear that the beast was going to sell for around $2000. Start saving your pennies now, MSI may have one of the best gaming notebook bargains of the year here.
