The network is part of BTs plan to offer Internet connections with speeds up to 100Mbps to 40% of homes and businesses by 2012. The upgrade requires the replacement of current copper cabling with fibre.
The new network will be trialed to about 500,000 homes and businesses with trials also being conducted in two rural areas including Calder Valley near Halifax and Taffs Well in South Wales.
