Nintendo's Satoru Iwata announced that the Wii has now sold 50 million consoles globally, putting it in the record book as the fastest selling game console in history passing the PS2 from Sony. Sales of the Wii have been predicted to slow during the global economic crisis, but so far, that hasn't happened.

Iwata also said that Nintendo has shipped 100M DS consoles. Part of the success behind the Wii is that it gets the whole family into gaming. The Wii has many more female players than other consoles, which is key to the typically male gaming market.
"Almost no one expected them to reach the current level of mainstream acceptance. It's even beyond what we possibly hoped for," Iwata said. "The market has expanded as video games have been accepted by more consumers than ever before. It's a cliché but it's not just the 18-year-old kid, it's the mom on the train, it's the high-school girl after she's done with her homework, everyone plays games."
