Good news for Nintendo fans, today Maxis announced that Spore Hero and Spore Hero Arena will be launched on the Wii and the Nintendo DS platforms. Maxis also gave details about the two new additions to the Spore franchise.
Spore Hero will be an action/adventure game with a heavily-emphasized plot and available only on the Nintendo Wii. Players will create their own character and fight to save his homeworld from the attack of a mysterious "dark force". Once again, players will collect animal parts in order to customize their character with new abilities. Maxis promises the game will offer "unparalleled customization" and "unmatched creative freedom".
In Spore Hero Arena players will compete against the computer and each other in 3D gladiatorial combat. Players will travel across the galaxy, fighting creatures and completing missions. Characters will once again collect parts to gain abilities and upgrades. Each planet will have a local champion, and defeating him will also grant you special abilities. Hero Arena will support multiplayer of up to 3 friends in a local area, as well as 1v1 through WiFi.
“When Maxis first considered bringing Spore to console players, the Nintendo platforms jumped out as a perfect fit. Whether it is the stylus-driven action of the Nintendo DS or playful controllers of the Wii, the massive Nintendo audience is the ideal home for Spore Hero and Spore Hero Arena,” said Lucy Bradshaw, VP of Maxis.
Nintendo does look like a perfect fit for the Spore franchise. The possibilities that motion control brings to Spore are big, especially since Spore Hero is going to be a fighting game. Both games come out in Fall of 2009, so we'll know then whether or not these new Spores are any good.
