In terms of its capabilities, the PlayStation 3 is probably the beefiest console on the market. Unfortunately very few games even start to take full advantage of the PS3's hardware. That's something Quantic Dream intends to change with their brand new Action/Mystery game, Heavy Rain: The Origami Killer.
In Heavy Rain, players will control one of four intertwined characters as they work to unravel the mystery of the origami killer. Each character will be a unique playing experience in and of themselves, which should give the game an enormous amount of replay potential. Director (and Quantic founder) David Cage has stated that Heavy Rain is supposed to be "...a very dark film noir thriller with mature themes."
Quantic has put a lot of effort into making playing Heavy Rain a cinematic experience. It won't be about winning or losing, or even solving the mystery. If your player character dies, you simply take control of one of the other characters, and the game continues on. There will be no way to 'win' Heavy Rain, just different ways to conclude the story.
On a technical level, everything we've seen of Heavy Rain (Heavy Rain G4TV Video embedded below) looks absolutely stunning. In that developer talk, you can see a lot of gorgeous environmental shots, as well as some scenes that show off the amazing facial acting that Heavy Rain's virtual actors are capable of. Even the most subtle facial ticks and expressions are shown clearly, as you can see in this casting video from the early production stages.
Heavy Rain is in the Alpha Stage right now. This means that the game itself is done. The cut-scenes are there, the plot is fleshed out, and Quantic is now working on nailing bugs and putting the finishing touches on their new offering. Heavy Rain debuted at E3 2006, and we'll be seeing it again in a few days at E3 2009.
