Virgin Media and Universal Music are teaming up to start offering a brand new music service in the UK. Basically the service will offer unlimited downloads of the entire back catalogue of Universal's artists.
With music pirating at an all time high both Virgin and Universal are hoping that this new service may be the way forward in cutting down the amount of music that is done illegally via file sharing everyday.Basically for a monthly subscription, which is yet to be announced you will get to download and keep all the music you download and use it on any MP3 device you own. Sounds like a good idea and a step in the right direction, but I think that you may find your favourite artists are not all signed up to Universal so it will be very limited in that sense. For it to work Virgin Media needs to get more major record labels involved so your choice of music is more varied. And most importantly the pricing has to be very attractive otherwise people will continue to use these file sharing sites.
Personally I am not sure that it will work because if it was such a great idea I think Apple and their iTunes site would of offered a subscription based service a long time ago. People are not keen to being tied into a contract based deal in these hard times.
