This September is supposedly the month of truth for the next generation of iPods. It's when we'll finally get to see whether the iPod camera rumors are true, or not. Most folks seem to have already made their mind up about that rumor, and this new leak from Boy Genius only makes it seem more plausible.
A radio talk show (and we all know that talk radio is a bastion of unbiased truth) posted the above image on their blog. Allegedly, a listener of theirs who is a used electronics dealer got shipped a prototype touch with a camera by accident. Normally this would get dismissed out of hand, but the picture looks pretty authentic. The camera is in the right place, and it has the red circuit board that is characteristic of many prototype devices.
There's nothing about the image or the story that jumps out at me as immediately fishy. Despite the somewhat dubious nature of any claim made by radio jocks, and the fact that Apple guards their prototypes with more ferocity than most people guard their children, this all seems at least vaguely reasonable. The photo looks good, so if this is a fake it's a fake someone invested a ton of effort into making look good.
