The video game hardware sales numbers for September were released by the NPD Group. Sony is back on top after a very, very long time. The Sony PS3 outsold the Nintendo Wii in September selling almost a half million PS3 consoles (491,800).
Nintendo managed to stay close by selling 462,800 Wii consoles in September. The Xbox 360 is a bit further off with 352,600 units sold (Bloomberg).
As this is a big event for Sony, CEO Jack Tretton made a blog post on the official Sony Playstation Blog titled: "Welcom to the PlayStation Nation".
Sony sees the coming holidays as one of their best yet.
Apparently even the PSPgo has helped pushed overall PSP hardware sales 300% from week-to-week after its launch. This means also that most people bought a PSP-3000 and not a PSPgo, else Sony would highlight the PSPgo sales number.
In any case Sony is on a roll with the $299 PS3 Slim, the new $349 250GB PS3 Slim and hot new games like the stunning UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves.
Nintendo will need to do more than just the $50 Wii price-cut to get back on top of the U.S. video game sales charts.
