Big Red has really high hopes for the imminent launch of the new Droid handset. I have to say, if you're going to bet millions on a smartphone, you could do a lot worse than the Droid. As a way of encouraging more sales (and in order to build-up hype) it looks like VZW will be opening their doors early on November 6th. Boy Genius reports that one of their contacts has informed them that Verizon stores will open at 6 AM on Droid launch day.
Of course, Moto's masterpiece isn't the only smartphone that's going to launch that day. Verizon will also start selling the $99 Droid Eris on the 6th. Is it just me, or does all this seem eerily familiar?
Apple opened their doors early on the day of the 3GS launch (at 7 AM, Verizon beat them by an hour) and also started selling the 3G for $99 on that day. The 3GS and the Droid are pretty much evenly matched, as are the Eris and the 3G.
Since Android launched, its fans have been waiting for a real showdown with Apple. Until now, we haven't had a smartphone that came close to being as sweet as the iPhone. Now, thanks to Verizon, we're going to get to see a real fight. I realize there is plenty of room for both phones to do well, and it's clear that nothing is going to dethrone the iPhone for a while, but I have the feeling this is just the start of a very long series of escalations between the two platforms.
If the Droid is able to put Apple on the defensive, we win, because that means Apple will work that much harder to put out a better product and offer better value. If the Droid can't make inroads against Apple, we win, because it'll send Moto and Verizon back to the drawing board to find new ways to seduce us.
Either way, this clash of the titans means better value and cooler gadgets for you, the consumer. Aren't you lucky!
