On Black Friday 2008 a Walmart worker died as a crowd of 2,000 eager shoppers broke down the doors at 5am in the morning to get their hands on doorbuster deals. The NRF (National Retail Federation) has now published a crowd management guide for retailers to make Black Friday a safe experience for shoppers and employees.
The guidelines outline the following essential components of a crowd control and/or emergency plan, including:
• Promotional/holiday sales and special events
• Sales and events versus emergency management crowd controls
• Mall-based retailers versus non mall-based retailers
• Crowd management guidelines references and contingency plans
More details on the NRF site.
According to a story on the Chicago Tribune Walmart's crowd control plan includes keeping the stores open on Thanksgiving and through the night into Black Friday. The doorbuster deals are still just available at 5am on Black Friday, but Walmart is letting customers in before then. Every Walmart store apparently has their own plan on how to handle Black Friday shoppers.
I do not know how early you should get to your Walmart store Black Friday morning to get a chance on the Doorbuster deals now that the stores are staying open. Please post your strategy below. Is there still time to enjoy your turkey dinner?
