Gift Tip 17: Canon G11 Camera

The Canon G11, launched by Canon is a highly regarded compact camera for capturing professional images. This camera gives photographers control over each and every aspect of photography. The Canon G11 has got a 5X optical zoom lens with image stabilization and a practical focal range of 28-140mm. The lens however starts at f2.8, unlike the S90, whose lens starts at f2. The sensor is a 10 megapixel 1/1.7" CCD, presumably the same as the S90.

The Canon G11 comes with some interesting features such as DIGIC 4 Image Processor, wide-angle 5x optical zoom , 10-megapixel high sensitivity system and RAW + JPEG shooting. The Canon G11 offers a DSLR experience in a pocketable body. Interestingly Canon has reduced the number of megapixels on the Canon G11 compared to the Canon G10 in a bid to improve image quality at higher ISO speeds. The camera uses the existing NB-7L lithium-ion battery, and it has a CIPA estimate of 390 shots with the LCD on. However one of the most interesting aspects of the Canon G11 is that it can take 1,000 shots with the LCD turned off.

Another defining characteristic of the Canon G11 camera is the return of the flip-out and twist LCD display. In addition, a new Low Light mode lets you capture images in a wide range of conditions. The Canon G11 automatically adjusts the ISO speed from ISO 320 to ISO 12800 in relation to ambient brightness, subject movement and camera shake. As far as the connectivity is concerned, on the back you'll find covered ports for HDMI out plus a combined USB 2.0/AV out connection for the user’s convenience.

The Canon G11 has many attractive features that include bright LCD display, excellent image quality and low light performance. The durability and battery life are also points that really stand out. However one of its major drawbacks is that the low light performance gets grainy at high ISO. The cost of this camera is also a bit on the high side.

The Canon G11 is a great gift for aspiring photographers. Also people who already own a DSLR camera will appreciate the G11 as a great 2nd camera because of its compact size.
