Will Firefox Mobile Kill the App Store?

Mozilla certainly thinks so. They're bragging that their new Fennec mobile Firefox browser could be the end of all app stores (PC Pro). The first version of Fennec will hit the N900 sometime this month, and versions will be out for Android and WinMo phones in early 2010. Mozilla claims that their mobile browser will have the fastest Javascript engine out there. Developers will be able to create apps directly for the browser, instead of needing to make a different app for every different family of handsets. Writing for a single mobile platform as opposed to five or six will save developers time and money, and will also benefit consumers by giving them a far greater selection of apps than they could otherwise have. Mozilla's VP of Mobile Jay Sullivan put it this way;"In the interim period, apps will be very successful. Over time, the web will win because it always does." Whether or not Sullivan's prediction ever comes true, Firefox Mobile is starting to sound like a seriously badass mobile browser. The Awesome Bar, which uses your history and browsing trends to auto-complete URLs, will be in the Mobile version. And, whats more, it will be synced up with your desktop browser. You'll be able to sync your tabs in real time as well. Imagine; you're surfing on your desktop and have around a dozen different tabs open. When you have to leave your computer, you can just pull up your smartphone and access that exact same set of window, tabs intact. Firefox Mobile will support add-ons. PC add-ons will work for it, but the Mozilla team has also created some apps specifically for Mobile. Alright Mozilla, you've got me salivating. Now hurry up and launch your browser for Android!
