Last week we reported about the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit, which was back then announced but not in the Apple Store yet. Now you can order it for $29 and it will ship late April.
The iPad Camera Connection Kit offers two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera. You can use your camera's USB cable or directly from an SD card.
The Apple iPad supports standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW.
Since you only have the Apple Dock Port on the iPad you need such an adapter to connect a USB device. It is not clear yet if the iPad will support external USB drives, but if it can talk to cameras via USB it most likely does.
