Samsung has announced a new external hard drive series called the G Series drives. The line is eco-friendly and available in 1.8", 2.5", and 3.5" form factors aimed at the youth market looking for stylish external storage solutions that are rugged.

New drives in the line unveiled at CEs include the G2 Portable with a 2.5-inch drive available in 250, 320, 500, and 640GB capacities. Samsung also unveiled the G3 Station in 1, 1.5, and 2TB versions. The drives are all ROHS certified and consumer small amounts of power.

The G3 Station can be tuned off and on along with the host computer and can reduce power consumption over 95% from 2.5W to 0.09W by entering standby mode automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity. Both of the new drives use USB 2.0 and will be available globally by the middle of January. The 2TB G3 Station and the 640GB G2 Portable will both sell for $199.
