Apple for the first time has given its certification to a solar-powered iPhone power unit. The product, developed by Novothink, is available now.

The Solar Surge is a charging case for the iPhone and iPod Touch that uses a solar panel and a lithium ion battery to provide sustainable power for the devices without the need for a standard outlet.

By charging outside with just 2 hours of sunlight, the Surge provides an equivalent 30 minutes of talk time over 3G, or an hour over 2G.

The unit contains 4 built-in LED indicator lights to show the charge level, and there is an app available that tells users how much solar charge is required to keep the device working at its current level, and also factors in weather forecasts.

The Solar Surge is available at this very moment. There is a $69.95 version for 2nd-gen iPod Touch devices and a $79.95 version for the iPhone 3G and 3GS.
