The new tape has a native capacity of 1.5TB and when compressed can store 3TB of data on a single tape cartridge. The tape uses LTO 5 tape and us the second-generation tape to offer drive level hardware-based writing of encrypted data to the tape cartridge.
Imation uses several different technologies in the new tape including TeraAngstrom tech for a smoother tape surface and a high signal to noise ratio to reduce errors. The tape also uses a corner snap for more strength, and a three-piece tape spool. The tape and its associated drives can write data at up to 280MB/sec.
