The Spring Design Alex e-Reader was unveiled last October and is supposed to ship on April 14th for $399. The dual screen Alex is similar to the B&N nook. Engadget already got their hands on an Alex and published a review.
The problem with the Alex is that it has no 3G, lacks the ebook content Amazon and B&N are offering and is, with that, way too expensive to compete.
Engadget says that there is a 3G Alex coming in Summer, by then we will know if eBooks are taking off on the Apple iPad or not. If they do, dedicated eBook readers are pretty much becoming unnecessary.
