Nintendo dropped a bombshell today with the announcement of a portable 3D gaming console dubbed Nintendo 3DS. Not much got revealed besides that you will not have to wear glasses to see the 3D on the 3DS. This means Nintendo uses auto-stereo displays in the 3DS slated to be released within the next 12 months.
There is actually a big possibility that the 3D screens used in the 3DS are based on the 3M 3D film technology.
In November we reported that 3M entered mass production of its 3D film that enables LCD screens to be used as auto-stereo displays.
Toshiba Mobile Displays already exhibited 3D LCD displays based using the 3M 3D film last summer.
Nintendo must be at the point where the price and the quality of a small 3D screen make sense to launch a mass market product. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Nintendo 3DS at the E3 2010 in June.
