This is another dispatch from the iPhone OS 4.0 unveiling, still ongoing in Cupertino. Gizmodo has the live blog. Apple has just announced the coming of the iPhone 'Game Center', the 'sixth tentpole' of the new edition of this OS. The game center is a social network that includes automatic matchmaking for games, and also gives you the ability to challenge friends to games.
The Game Center will have leaderboards and achievements. Considering the App Store has 50k game and entertainment titles, this new network could quickly grow to rival other gaming networks like Steam. It will be available to everyone “later this year”. Most likely at or around the launch of the next edition of iPhone.
