...If you're willing to jailbreak it, that is. Under normal conditions, the OS 4.0 update will not give the iPhone 3G the ability to multitask. Apple believes that the addition of multitasking will slow down the aging smartphone and shrink its battery life. Just because Apple doesn't want it done, though, doesn't mean it isn't possible.
BGR reports that iPhone hacker cdevwill was able to get the 3G multitasking, using the 4.0 jailbreak. The demo he gives is while using some fairly wimpy apps, and it's unlikely that a 3G will be able to handle any intensive processes. Still, multitasking is multitasking! Kudos to cdevwill for sticking one right in The Eye of Jobs.

The “geek mind” is concerned with more than just the latest iPhone rumors, or which company will win the gaming console wars. I4U is concerned with more than just the latest photo shoot or other celebrity gossip.
The “geek mind” is concerned with life, in all its different forms and facets. The geek mind wants to know about societal and financial issues, both abroad and at home. If a Fortune 500 decides to raise their minimum wage, or any high priority news, the geek mind wants to know. The geek mind wants to know the top teams in the National Football League, or who’s likely to win the NBA Finals this coming year. The geek mind wants to know who the hottest new models are, or whether the newest blockbuster movie is worth seeing. The geek mind wants to know. The geek mind wants—needs—knowledge.
