Apparently it's more difficult to get an app on the iPhone than it is to win a Pulitzer Prize. That's what Mark Fiore found out when he submitted a handful of political cartoons to the increasingly-censored iPhone App Store.
Fiore sent his app, NewsToons, to Apple but he was rejected with the same notification that porn submitters get: "materials that may be considered obscene, pornographic, or defamatory" are not allowed in the store.
However, this week, Fiore received a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. In an interview with NiemanLab.org, Fiore mentioned that the same content - the content that netted him the biggest prize in writing - was too objectionable for Apple.
Well, now Apple is making an about-face and a representative personally called Fiore to encourage him to resubmit and be assured of getting accepted this time.
What's ridiculous about this is how much more frequently we're seeing content being rejected that could be found in the New York Times or shopping catalogs. In its rejection e-mail to Fiore, Apple actually said the app was rejected because "it contains content that ridicules public figures." That's pretty strong censorship, rising to the levels of dictatorial regimes.
