Add another tally to Blockbuster's online service. The company has struck a deal with Universal Pictures to offer "It's Complicated" weeks before it hits other rental services, and it's the first of many such deals in the pipeline.
Search for "It's Complicated" on Netflix and you'll get this message: "You can save It's Complicated and it will be added to your movie list automatically once it becomes available."
But on Blockbuster.com, it's already available for instant streaming, even though the DVD just hit retail stores today. Similar companies, like Netflix, now have to wait four weeks before studios will offer their movies digitally.
"Providing a four-week advance of new releases for our customers reflects Blockbuster's strategy to be the leading multichannel provider for movies and is possible because of our long-standing business relationships with the major studios," said Blockbuster CEO James W. Keyes.
Other movies from Universal, as well as select titles from other studios, will also hit Blockbuster's online service, both through mail and instant streaming, day-and-date with the retail DVD release.
Blockbuster is also mulling over offering movies and video games through one combined online service, which would make it the only major company to do so and could drive a dividing line between Netflix and Gamefly.
