Back when I was a kid, the only person I knew with a real tablet PC was Captain Jean Luc Picard. In the intervening decade-and-change, the tablet PC has gone from the purview of science-fiction writers to...Wal-Mart? AppleInsider reports that the mega-mega store hopes to sell Apple's iPad in some of their retail locations by the end of 2010.
No specific details of any sort of deal were released. Gary Severson, SVP of entertainment for Wal-Mart, told Businessweek that his company believes it will sell the iPad this year. From the sound of it, Apple and Wal-Mart are currently in the midst of negotiations.
I have no trouble envisioning iPad's on sale at Wal-Mart. Apple is working to create a market here. They want as many viable distribution channels for the iPad as they can get. It's only a matter of time before the competition catches up again and the iPad is no longer the 'best tablet' on the market. Apple needs to secure as large a base as possible before that happens.
