Big Love, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Entourage are all making their way to the PS3, thanks to a new deal hammered out between Sony and Time Warner's HBO.
In total, 11 HBO shows are slated to appear on the PS3's video store sometime down the pike. Don't expect to pick up that latest episode because you missed it last night, though. The shows won't be available until 11 months after they air on TV.
That's because HBO doesn't want to stifle cable companies by lessening the value of it as a premium, monthly subscription channel. It's still a victory for Sony, though, as the first video game maker to jump on HBO content. There is no such deal for the Xbox 360.
"HBO is a high-profile content provider, and a real premium service, so we think this really reinforces that the PlayStation is more than just a video-game console now. It gives consumers that big-screen, HD experience in the home on a device other than cable and satellite, and that's becoming the norm now as opposed to the exception," said the CEO of Sony's PlayStation division Jack Tretton.
Unlike most other TV shows, HBO series will cost $2.99 per episode. That's more than triple the price of other content on the PlayStation Store.
HBO is still cocky, but in this every-digitized world of entertainment mediums, it may need to rethink its position as thinking it is better than every other channel.
