I have a desktop computer that I built recently and it has pair of USB 3.0 ports. The reason most machines and add-in cards today only have a pair of USB 3.0 ports is that the host controllers only support two. VIA Labs has a new VL800 USB 3.0 host controller that it will be showing off at Computex.

The VL800 offers four USB 3.0 ports and supports the bandwidth needed for all four to be used simultaneously. The host controller will eventually find its way into all sorts of consumer devices.

We will see the VL800 in desktops and notebooks, servers, docking systems, and add-in cards. The host controller also maintains backwards compatibility with older USB 2.0 and earlier protocols. USB Battery Charging Specification is also supported allowing the ports to charge devices like cameras and phones.
