The iPad is paying off for at least one magazine. Wired's New York Bureau Chief has just announced via Twitter that 24,000 copies of Wired magazine iPad edition have sold within the first 24 hours. Electronista reports that this may have made Conde Nast as much as $83,832. The downloads cost around $5 a piece.
It is still far too early to say whether or not the iPad is the savior that the print giants are looking for. At least some of these exceptional sales must be due to the novelty of the iPad and curiosity over these much-hyped iPad editions. If this new format can keep numbers up on subsequent releases, we'll know Wired has hit on a winner.
