Sony has been in the eReader market for a long time. The Sony offerings didn’t exactly set the world on fire but when the Amazon Kindle hit the market and brought more visibility to the category, Sony took advantage.

Sony announced today that it was expanding its global eReader business. Sony plans to make its eReaders available in the Asia/Pacific markets this year in countries like Japan, China, and Australia. The eReaders form Sony will also be added to Italy and Spain.

Sony expects that it will see big business in some of the new markets, specifically Japan. eBook sales in Japan are a huge business with $500 million in sales in 2009. Availability and pricing for the new local markets along with pre-order dates will be announced closer to launch.
