Today is the second day of E3 2010. I opened my morning with a visit to the gigantic Xbox booth. There I was treated to an early look at one of the most highly-anticipated games in the world; Gears of War III.

Don't expect any major shifts in gameplay here. The Gears series has always been about fast-paced shoot-em-up combat, with legions of enemies and gigantic screen-filling bosses. Gears III will contain all of that-along with a laundry list of new execution-style moves. My favorite? The Bag-N-Tag, which involves shoving a live grenade into an enemy and then shoving them into a group of their friends.

Most of today's demo focused on the new Beast Mode, which allows you to play as the Locust against a force of entrenched human defenders. You will fight in waves, gaining more points to spend on nastier Locust's as you make your way through round after round. The defenders upgrade as well; trading in barbed wire for laser fences, turrets and badass “Silverback” mech suits.

And yes, you WILL be able to play the Berzerker. The armored kantus, a knife-covered version of the normal kantus, makes a terrifying assault unit to bring up the flanks in a Berzerker rush. There's also a new monster; the serapede. It shoots electricity.

The Silverback mech suit looks like a ton of fun, although we only saw it from the opposing side. It is no match for a Berzerker one-on-one, but acting as range support it is more than capable of ripping one apart. The multi-turret deserves a mention; it allows you to stick four guns together and use them as a stationary emplacement.

Gears of War III will launch on April 5, 2011.
