The drives are 2.5-inch units that are connected to a 3.5-inch drive bracket. This lets the user upgrade to 2.5-inch drives and use them inside legacy storage arrays and servers that require 3.5-inch form factors. Toshiba claims that the 2.5-inch HDDs are as much as 70% more efficient with idle power loads than 3.5-inch HDDs.
The new family of HDDs use the 6Gb/s SAS interface and have a 10,025 RPM spin speed. Toshiba will offer the drives in 600GB, 450GB, and 300GB capacities. The media transfer rate is 216MB/s. the drives will whip to OEMs starting in July.
