Yesterday Apple released the new iOS 4 operating system for compatible iPhone and iPod touch devices. I have downloaded the iOS 4 update as soon as it appeared and the iTunes servers were still in good condition as the download took only a couple minutes.
I installed iOS 4 on my iPhone 3GS without any problems. My biggest concern was that the iPhone 3GS would degrade in performance with iOS 4. To my pleasure iOS 4 improves the performance of the 3GS.
Especially pinch zooming feels much smoother now. Overall every function performs at least like before with iPhone 3 OS.
The new multi-tasking feature is really neat and easy to use. You access the "taskbar" with double click on the home button.
It is nice to quickly access my most used apps directly from the taskbar. The apps in there are in suspended mode. New multi-tasking versions of apps are filling the app store - Pandora for instance.
The other new feature that is immediately beneficial is folders. I have now much less screens to deal with and organized for instance all apps for my 18 month old son in one folder (Baby Piano, Peekaboo Barn, I hear Ewe, etc.).
I did not experience any bug or lag using iOS 4 on the 3GS so far. From where I stand I recommend the iOS 4 upgrade for the iPhone 3GS. There are reports on the Apple support forums of upgrade issues, crashing apps in iOS 4, battery life and more. I do not see a dramatic amount though.
