Apple confirmed that you need to hold the iPhone 4 in a certain way to avoid reception loss. If you are not able to train yourself to the special iPhone 4 grip, meet the all new iPhone 4 Handle. The first telephones by Bell already had these back in the 18th century (see here, if you need an image).
Do you have any other funny ideas for this prime example of "limits of technology"? It is really a technical limitation, confirmed for instance by this analyses by AntennaSys. Still, Apple could have found a better design to avoid this issue. Paying $29 to Apple for an iPhone 4 Bumper is not a fun idea.
Apparently Steve Jobs got used to hold the new iPhone 4 a certain way, because else he would have nixed the design.
