For those people who have really bad credit or just hate contracts, Virgin Mobile is breaking the barrier to personal Wi-Fi hotspots, offering a first-of-its-kind pay-as-you-go plan.
Virgin Mobile's flagship MiFi device is the Novatel MiFi 2200. For those who don't know what a MiFi is, it picks up the same kind of wireless signal that mobile phones do, but instead of powering a phone it creates a personal Wi-Fi connection that users can tap into.
Most MiFi devices on the market now require users to sign up for a monthly contract, paying a certain amount every month in order to use the data connection.
Virgin Mobile's design is for users to purchase "Broadband2Go" cards in increments of 100 MB ($10), 300 MB ($20), 1 GB ($40), or 5 GB ($60).
This is similar to Virgin Mobile's prepaid phones, which require users to purchase cards to add minutes to their device.
The MiFi device itself costs $150.
