Windows 7 Slates By End Of 2010

We can expect to see several new Windows 7 slates launch before the end of 2010. ZDNet reports that Steve Ballmer recently addressed 14,000 partners at the Worldwide Partner Conference and promised them new Windows 7 tablets by year's end. Asus, Dell, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony were all outed as manufacturers for these new gadgets.

Ballmer said to expect slates to launch in a wide range of price points and form factors. Some will have keyboards (how is a slate with a keyboard not a notebook?) while others will be e-ink capable (like the Adam?) or come with fancy docks.

In essence, Microsoft is using the scatter-gun approach to selling slates. They know there is a market, the iPad is proof of that. Now they need to find what sort of form-factor and price-point will entice customers to buy Windows 7 tablets. This holiday season will see the launch of many, many new tablets. Most of them will crash and burn. The few that succeed will form the foundation of the Windows slate market for years to come.
