FaceTime will soon be coming to a wider range of Apple devices. BGR received word from a reliable source as to how this service will be rolled out to a wider audience. Your Apple ID will be registered with your iPad/iPod touch, which will allow other devices to "call" yours using your email address.
Push notifications will be used to deliver incoming call requests. We can expect to see push notification hit in OS 4.1. BGR backed up this news by screenshots of a FaceTime activation screen, informing users that "People will call you with your email address. What email address would you like to use?"
So there you are. We're one step closer to doing away with the concept of phone numbers altogether.
