AMOLED display technology may be taking another great leap forward, thanks to our friends at Samsung. Super AMOLED is about to give way to the next wave in Awesome; unbreakable AMOLED displays. By using a plastic display instead of a brittle glass one, Samy will be able to make their screens much tougher.
They plan to stick a thin film transistor on a plastic panel and replace the standard vinyl protection sheet with a thin polymide film. This will allow for thinner screens that are almost impossible to crack or shatter. Plastic is much easier to scratch than glass though. It's worth wondering how Samsung will make this display pocket-safe. They aren't due to hit for another two years-ish, so there's plenty of time to work that out.
