In an announcement that makes it seem like current Microsoft employees don't even own a Windows Mobile phone, the company said that all 90,000 of its employees would be getting a Widows Phone 7 phone for free.
"With all the buzz, a lot of you are asking how you can get your hands on a phone and get more involved. So, I am thrilled to announce that a new Windows Phone 7 will be made available to every Microsoft employee as we launch in each market around the world," wrote Microsoft's Andy Lee in a memo to the entire company.
It is certainly a big cost for the software company, but moreover it sort of shows how unpopular the Windows mobile OS is, if Microsoft has to actually hand out their devices to their own employees. I bet more Apple employees own an iPhone than Microsoft employees own a Windows Mobile device, proportionally speaking.
It's more than just getting the word out about the new mobile platform, though. Microsoft is also encouraging its employees to really get their hands dirty with the phone.
Lee's e-mail went on to say, "When you get your phone, the first thing you can do it MAKE IT PERSONAL! Pick up the phone, turn it on, download mail, get directions, make calls, find friends…. In short USE IT!"
