If you've got a Droid X and don't want to wait a week to get 2.2, you could go ahead and try a one-step rooting procedure right now. Android and Me reports that a dev named Sil3ntKi113 has invented a two-button rooting set-up for Windows devices.
Once you've rooted your phone, it will only be able to handle apps that say they are "root users only". You will not be able to switch over to any other mod or ROM after this. For more information, visit the root kit site right here. Make sure not to delete anything crucial, like Blur or Backup Assistant.
