RIM unveiled the Blackberry Torch this week. The Torch features a touchscreen and a slide out keyboard. It runs the new Blackberry OS 6. The hardware configuration is behind that of the latest iPhone and Android phones. The overall verdict in the first reviews of the Torch is that it's a better Blackberry, but not as good as the current top Android and Apple phones.
Engadget says about the Torch in their review: "Instead of meeting the rising stars of the smartphone world (Apple and Google) head-on, RIM has taken something more like baby steps toward innovation. The company seems convinced that it's got a better idea about what its customers want and how a smartphone should act in 2010, but we can't say we agree."
Walt Mossberg Torch review concludes: "Overall, the Torch and the BlackBerry 6 operating system are good products that improve the BlackBerry experience considerably and bring the device closer to its newer rivals."
RIM also sold a ton of the Blackberry Storm, despite bad reviews. There is a huge Blackberry install base out there and the new Blackberry Torch might just b what they need to stay on the platform.
