Android is kicking serious butt all over the place. It is now the #1 selling smartphone platform in the US. TechCrunch reports that, in a talk with journalists, Google CEO Eric Schmidt stated that 200,000 new Android handsets are shipping every day. Two months ago, back in May, that number was "only" at 100,000.

Schmidt stated that the Droid X was largely responsible for this recent surge in sales. He also confirmed that the Android project has proved to be extremely lucrative for Google. These handset sales drive search, which increases revenue.

“Trust me that revenue is large enough to pay for all of the Android activities and a whole bunch more,”

Schmidt also added that he "loved" the iPhone's success. This further underscores the fact that this idea of violent competition between platforms is a false dichotomy established by marketers and rabid fans. Google benefits from Apple's success, and odds are good that Apple will end up benefiting from Android. Both platforms drive one another to be more competitive and increase the overall value of the smartphone industry.
