Peugeot Unveils Diesel Hybrid Crossover

We don't see many diesel cars here in the US, but in Europe they are very common. One of the reasons they are so common is that many diesel engines are much more fuel-efficient than gasoline counterparts are. That has always made me wonder why we didn’t see diesel hybrids.

Peugeot has announced a new diesel hybrid called the 3008 Hybrid4. The new vehicle will hit showrooms in Europe in the spring of 2011. The car has a 2.0L inline four-cylinder diesel engine making 163 horsepower. The electric motor is a 37hp unit and the battery pack is a nickel-metal hydride unit.

The 3008 has sport, four-wheel drive, and auto modes. In auto mode, the 6-speed manual transmission can be used like your average automatic transmission. The diesel hybrid is able to provide 61.9 mpg on the highway according to US measurements and produces 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Pricing is unknown.
