You can now call any phone directly from Gmail. Yes, you read that right. Google has just posted on their blog that Gmail calling for EVERYONE is now active. No longer will you both have to be on Gchat at the same time. Calls to the US and Canada will be free for the rest of this year, and calls elsewhere will be available starting at .02 a minute.
You'll need to install the voice and video plugin for this to work. If you have one, your Google Voice number will be displayed as the outbound call number. You will be able to set things up to receive calls right in gmail. For more info, go here.
Anyone else still sort of in awe of this news? Remember when the mere concept of a video phone was incredibly impractical and silly? Now we're at the point where virtually every gadget we own can act as a phone.
