This has been a HUGE day for Apple. New iOS versions, new iPods and iTunes 10 with Ping. Now Apple has capped things off by announcing a new edition to Apple TV.
Apple seems to believe consumers want small, cool and efficient entertainment hook-ups that deliver HDTV and movies on demand. The second gen Apple TV meets these self-stated requirements. It is 1/4 the size of the original and can fit in the palm of your freaking hand. It has n WiFi built in and the ability to rent a huge variety of HD content. No local storage will be necessary.
Everything will be streamed, eliminating the need for any syncing. It will connect through your TV through HDMI and all content will be HD when available. Renting a TV show will cost 99 cents, while first-run movies will hit (on DVD launch day) for $4.99. Both will get cheaper as they get older.
YouTube watching, Flickr browsing and MobileMe video/photo support will be there out of box. Also supported is Netflix, YouTube, Podcasts and internet radio. The price? A mere $99. It will be available in 4 weeks. and pre-orders start today.
