Firmware update taking longer than expected
After months and months of Sony saying that the PS3 would be able to play Blu-ray 3D movies in September, now that it's September Sony is saying, "Nope. October."
The PS3 can already project 3D images, but only if you're playing a 3D game. Pop in a Blu-ray 3D movie disc and it will not work. Only a very few expensive Blu-ray players can actually play the new format.
It's critical to get the update to the PS3, as it is the most popular Blu-ray Disc player. Early adopters have become anxious as they don't want to have to go out and buy another Blu-ray player just to be able to play the couple of Blu-ray 3D movies that are available.
Sony said the update would be available this summer, though they really pushed the envelope on that by later clarifying it would be September. Now it won't meet either deadline as it has been pushed back to October.
Meanwhile, Samsung has become the first to offer 3D TV content via instant streaming. There's a new app on the Samsung Apps store that lets users watch 3D movie trailers, which will later be expanded to include premium 3D content like TV shows and movies.
