Happy 25th Birthday, Super Mario Bros!

25 years and 240 million copies later, Super Mario Bros is as iconic and evergreen as ever.

The classic platformer was released on September 13, 1985. Since then it has become the highest-selling game of all time. Nearly a quarter of a billion copies of the game have been sold across platforms that include pretty much every single system that Nintendo has ever released. In some cases, it was released multiple times on the same system.

The game has kind of become the I Love Lucy of video games. Just like that TV show continued to be aired on TV for over 50 years, Super Mario Bros has continued to be released on new platforms ever since it was originally put out on the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

For no one is the game's success more important than Shigeru Miyamoto. By virtue of creating the character that we know today as Mario, Miyamoto has catapulted to become of the most influential names in the history of the industry. He's been working at Nintendo for a mind-blowing 31 years.

In a statement about today's historic anniversary, Miyamoto said, "Stimulated by advancements in technologies, we have always enjoyed creating the Super Mario Bros. games. The series has always taken advantage of the latest technological advancements and is the fruit of creativity of many of my hard-working friends working closely as a team."

Today, gamers can still buy Super Mario Bros as a digital download on the Wii. It costs $5.
