Today, Verizon Wireless has sent out a press release officially announcing the launch of the Droid R2-D2 Edition. Starting September 30th, it will be available in Big Red's retail outlets and online. The phone's package will look like carbonite, and the D2 will come with a Star Wars media dock and stereo headset.

The R2-D2 Edition includes R2 notification sounds and ringtones, four live wallpapers, an R2-D2 clock widget and "The Best of R2-D2" video with "original Cantina music". It also comes with an exclusive binoculars app.

All Android 2.1 users on Verizon's network can now purchase the Empire Strikes Back app from the Android Market. It allows you to browse, download and view content from the movie. Premium account access is available for $2.99. The R2-D2 Droid will cost $249 after a $100 rebate and with a 2-year agreement. Go here for more details.
