TechCrunch is one of the best known technology blogs and plays especially a big role in the silicon valley startup scene. Now GigaOM reports that AOL is close to buying TechCrunch. AOL and TechCrunch did not comment on this rumor yet. AOL already owns Weblogs Inc. with its flagship tech blog Engadget. TechCrunch also runs CrunchGear. CrunchGear and Engadget compete directly. I guess there would be some consolidation happening if this deal goes through.
Michael Arrington launched TechCrunch in 2005 and was just last week causing a big stir by crashing a meeting of "Super Angels". TechCrunch is currently hosting the TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francsico. Maybe AOL and TechCrunch take this event as the venue to announce a deal. Update: It is official. AOL buys TechCrunch.
