As promised Nintendo announced today the release date and the pricing of the 3D Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo 3DS will launch on February 26th 2011 in Japan at a price of 25,000 Yen (~$300). Nintendo says that their international operations will make separate announcements at a later date when the 3DS is launching. I assume the release of the 3DS will be later than February in the US. Update: The 3DS launches in March in the US and Europe.
Earlier rumors of Nintendo releasing the 3DS in November in Japan have been totally wrong. The 3D is quite a bit more expensive than the Nintendo DSi. In Japan the DSi sells for 15,000 Yen (~$180). This is about a 40% premium. Based on the US pricing of the DSi that would mean the Nintendo 3DS will be selling for $210.
Nintendo sums up the upcoming Nintendo 3DS with this description: Nintendo 3DS, the successor to the Nintendo DS series whose global cumulative consolidated shipment from the company exceeded 130 million units at the end of June 2010, will also have compatibility with existing Nintendo DS software. In addition to providing players with the ability to enjoy game software and other 3D content without the need for special glasses, Nintendo 3DS, as a brand new portable entertainment device, has a variety of fun and playful functions including capturing and viewing 3D photos and other features such as SpotPass communications.
