Hitachi makes all sorts of electronics and the company is also into the storage marker in a big way. A new HDD has been unveiled by the company that is designed for notebooks and other devices using 2.5-inch storage. The drive will be offered in 5400 rpm and 7200rpm varieties.
Both versions of the drive use the same platters with 375GB per platter. The 5400 rpm versions is the Travelstar 5K750 and the 7200 rpm version is the Travelstar 7K750. The drive family will also include 640GB and 500GB versions all using the same 9.5mm form factor.
The 5400 rpm HDD needs 1.4W of power during read/write operations and only 0.5W when idle. The 7200 rpm version needs only a bit more power with 1.8W during read/write operations. Options for self encryption and enhanced availability will be offered. The 5K750 will ship in retail packages in November for $129.99 with the 7200 rpm version coming in Q1 2011.
